Origin

The Americauna chicken breed is a descendant of the Old World game birds that were brought to North America by the early European settlers.

The Ameraucana is a chicken breed that was developed in the United States in the 1970s from Araucana chickens brought over from Chile. The Ameraucana was bred to retain the blue-egg gene of its Araucana ancestors. The name “Ameraucana” derives from “America” and “Araucana”.

Characteristics

The Americauna is a dual-purpose bird, meaning that they are both good for eggs and meat. They are known for their hardiness and resistance to disease.

Choosing a color for your beautiful breed is easy with several colors to pick from, including black, blue, blue wheaten, brown red, buff, silver, wheaten, and white.

Ameraucanas have tails, muffs, and beards, whereas Araucanas in the United States have ear tufts and are rumpless. The earlobes on Ameraucanas are small and round, with small or absent wattles; they’re also red like the bird’s comb and shanks (which tend towards black on birds with black plumage).

Eggs & Hatching

The Americauna chicken breed is known for its excellent egg-laying ability. They can lay anywhere from 150 to 200 eggs per year, depending on the climate and the quality of their feed. The eggs are medium to large in size, and they are a light brown or cream color.

The Ameraucana is one of the few chicken breeds to lay blue eggs. It has many similarities to the Araucana, including the pea comb and blue egg gene.

Climate

The ideal climate for an Americauna chicken is moderate with ample sunlight. They can handle colder climates too, as long as they have access to fresh air and get enough exercise. Their pea comb protects them from frostbite in cold weather.

If you want blue eggs and a pet that is relatively quiet and docile, the Americauna chicken should be added to your flock. They make excellent backyard birds and are good for families with young children.

Katie

My name is Katie and I live on a hobby farm in a small town in Canada. We have 20-30 chickens on our farm. We collect over a dozen eggs a day and either eat them ourselves or sell them. We love life on the farm.
